Netflix can help your language learning — from the comfort of your own sofa.

When you’re learning a new language with us at la Academia, our tutors will always encourage you to practise your skills at home. The more you practise, the easier and quicker you will progress. Now, you don’t have to take a foreign holiday to do this – you just need to use your Netflix subscription and a really useful – and free – Chrome extension. This lets you watch shows with two subtitles on at the same time so you can pair translations and learn some new vocabulary in the process.

It’s a clever service that makes use of the many major languages Netflix offers in subtitles. That includes Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

And you can make it work for you. Hovering over a word produces a pop-up dictionary, clicking the word lets you hear it. You can slow down the speech to hear it clearly. By pausing playback at the end of every subtitle, you can learn line by line.

This is all thanks to David Wilkinson and Ognjen Apic, who began the project as a hobby a few years ago. There are now 131000 people using the tool. You can get it here.

So now there’s now excuse for not getting in that vital practice. Call us now for information about how you can start learning a new language.
