So, it’s highly likely you’ll come across certain words and phrases that don’t have English equivalents when you’re learning English as a foreign language.

The English vocabulary is vast though. There’s no undue cause for concern that you’ll ever end up tongue-tied.

To this end, learning English as a foreign language will help you get round this plain fact – that certain words and phrases you might be used to using in your native tongue just don’t exist in English per se!

Here’s a few fun examples of words that are literally untranslatable in to English:-

• Schadenfreude – What do you call smugness and relish as a result of other people’s lack of good fortune. You call it “schadenfreude” in German.
  

• Sobremesa – The BBC’s Mike Randolph said, “There is no equivalent word in English, though the concept is simple: Sobremesa is the time you spend at the table after you’ve finished eating.” So, we can understand this Spanish dining etiquette. But we don’t have an English word that sums it up without a full explanation.

Language lessons for footballers aren’t needed for national teams.

They’re needed for the crème of the sport who might play for multiple league teams in several different countries during their careers, including some of the above.

What sorts of language lessons for footballers are most requested? 

There are different ways of providing language lessons for footballers, though the end goal is the same – for players to become more fluent in the mother tongue of whichever country they find themselves working and living in.

Three of the most common criteria for language lessons for footballers include –

• Language commonality – Some Managers believe that a common language boosts team comradery. The common language chosen is usually the primary language of the country a team calls home. In such cases, language lessons for footballers are arranged for those who need them.

• Intensive learning – Some players sign up for intensive language courses, either ahead of their moves, or soon after arriving in a new country.

• Home Office requirements – Non-national residents in the UK are required to reach and maintain an acceptable level of English fluency to live and work here. These rules aren’t waived for sporting icons, making language lessons for footballers highly relevant in cases of any potential doubt.

But, a word of warning. The UK comprises multiple different regional dialects. As a result, there can be a touch of postcode lottery to learning English a foreign language.  English can be like a foreign language to itself and to its native speakers.

One of the best cases to illustrate this point is bread. The staff of life. The humble slice.

Different regional descriptions for bread that automatically spring to mind are:-

• Bap (in Scotland)
• Bara (in Wales)
• Barm (in Lancashire)
• Batch (in Warwickshire)
• Bun (in the North east)
• Cob (in the Midlands)
• Roll (generic)
• Softie (in Aberdeen)
• Stottie (in the North east)

But the list doesn’t stop there apparently.

Lauren Cocking’s article for BBC Travel cites a University of Manchester study about this very subject. The study unearthed even more bread terms per buck.

“Oldham got in on the action with ‘muffin’” and “Other sources often throw even more intensely regional options into the mix, like Lancashire’s ‘oven bottoms’, and the Leeds area ‘scufflers’ or ‘breadcakes’ (the aforementioned barm sometimes comes suffixed with ‘cake’, too).” 

It’s exactly these sorts of quirky nuances that make learning English as a foreign language sometimes challenging, but always fun.

When a native journalist with a firm grasp of the English language holds her hands up to the sheer craziness, the proof is surely in the (bread) pudding. Lauren explains,

“While to me a ‘teacake’ naturally implies a plain, savoury bread roll, most of the country outside West Yorkshire believes a teacake to be a sweet bread laden with plump currants.” 

Confused? You will be.

James Nicolls famously summed this up when he said:–

“We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.” 

Questionable beginnings. But that didn’t stop it becoming the world’s Lingua Franca. This refers to a language that’s universally acknowledged and taken on by other nations that have different native languages.

In the Days of the Year description of English Language Day, it alerts us to a sting in the tail, warning that the English language:-

“…also stands as one of the most complicated languages to learn as a second language (with Japanese standing toe to toe with it for this inauspicious award).”

One player in particular, Antonio Valencia, got stick from the press when it was revealed that his English is not good enough for his Manager, and he has to take English lessons. “Why hasn’t he mastered English in the 8 years he’s been living here?” was the question.

The answer is that learning a language is not always easy, even when you live in that country and have plenty of opportunity to practise. Language classes are clearly a good idea, and it looks as though Valencia will be benefiting from one-to-one English lessons, which will allow him and his teacher to work through the areas where he is less confident.

In an earlier blog that la Academia published about how adults and children learn languages, we remarked on research that showed that children fare better than adults in a foreign language culture, because people are prepared to correct them more than adults.

Antonio Valencia has probably reached a degree of competence where he can get by in daily life, and now he speaks English well enough that to correct him seems rude. By making him go back to language lessons, van Gaal is giving him the opportunity to build on what he as learned, unlearn some errors, and to improve his vocabulary.  This can surely only add to his confidence and make him feel more at home in the UK.
