Business language training is an ace up your sleeve for communicating with non-native stakeholders clearly, confidently, and professionally. And yes, Better Business Communication Day on 26th January is the ideal excuse to talk about it. This is because businesses are increasingly trading in all corners of the globe. As a result, language barriers are creeping in, and so do misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and repeated “Sorry?” scenarios. Who wants those in a boardroom, on a Zoom call, or while chatting at an exhibition stand? National Today shared in their Better Business Communication Day – January 26, 2026 article: “On average, people spend around 70 to 80 % of their days using some form of communication. Of that time, we typically spend about 9% writing, 16% reading, 30% speaking, and 45% listening”. That’s a seismic amount of communicating every working day.

National Today shared in their Better Business Communication Day – January 26, 2026 article:

“On average, people spend around 70 to 80 % of their days using some form of communication. Of that time, we typically spend about 9% writing, 16% reading, 30% speaking, and 45% listening”.

That’s a seismic amount of communicating every working day. Imagine what it potentially means if you’re not speaking the same language.

The Reality of Better Business Communication Speaks for Itself

At its heart, business communication means sharing information clearly and effectively with two stakeholder groups:

Internally with your team

Externally with clients, partners, and suppliers

Now add international markets, overseas offices, or export ambitions into the mix.

It’s worth giving some serious thought to business language training if your business has:

Multinational teams working across borders

Export personnel dealing with overseas buyers

Employees negotiating, presenting, or building relationships in another language

This is where business language training makes an epic difference. And here’s how you can experience it firsthand.

Choose From Tailored Group or 1:1 Business Language Training

You might choose to learn in small group language classes, either at your premises, an external venue like a hotel meeting room, or at your local language school.

It’s practical, social and far more engaging than just textbooks for a variety of reasons, such as:

Role play and exercises for real world practice

Immediate feedback in a supportive environment

Learning alongside colleagues with shared goals

But what if you need industry specific vocabulary or advanced skills?

Individual language tuition might be a superior fit when your role, sector, or level needs a fully personalised plan.

Flexible, Powerful, and Built Around Your Business

At la Academia, business language training can take place at our Cheadle head office or at your premises, at your chosen time slots, even changing from week to week if necessary.

Get in touch with your requirements and we’ll help you choose the most effective option for your team. Better communication builds better business, after all.

And it’s no wonder workplace language learning is gaining traction.

A recent HRD Connect article Corporate language training: A catalyst for professional growth and business success explained: “Language barriers can pose significant challenges, leading to misunderstandings, reduced productivity, compromised employee safety, and poor customer satisfaction.”

Harness Business Language Training to Break Down Barriers

Corporate language courses help remove misunderstandings and enable colleagues to communicate clearly, so no one’s left nodding along in confusion.

As a result, teamwork is nurtured, with ideas flowing more freely when people understand each other. And that’s where innovation happens.

Build Cultural Smarts

Cultural awareness goes beyond learning a language to understanding the people behind it. This is gold in today’s global workplace.

In addition, it skyrockets talent attraction. Offering language support shows diverse employees they’ll be valued, and makes your organisation more appealing to top talent.

Reinforce Confidence and Connection

Employees who feel comfortable expressing themselves stay longer and work happier.

For these reasons, investment in language training signals inclusion and says more than a glossy DEI statement ever could.

Get Real World Practice and Achieve Real Results

Want to sharpen your French for client meetings? Brush up on your Mandarin for market expansion? Drill down into Urdu to reflect your staff, customers, and the diverse society you serve?

At la Academia, we make business language training dynamic, fun, and practical. Our corporate teaching methods include role play, industry specific vocab sessions, and individual tuition or group classes with a strong immersive vibe.

Ready to give your team the gift of being heard? Get in touch and let’s talk business language training.

“Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen” is the original quotation from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and most linguists would probably agree.

Each language has its own peculiarities, and sometimes a really useful linguistic feature of one is not available in another, but understanding the building blocks of another language does expand the brain and is highly recommended!

Some of what is used in one language is just not translatable – “bon appetit” is an example, a great phrase with no direct translation.

Examples of great ideas in other languages that do not apply in English:

In Japanese, rather than having an additional word to express the concept of being able to do something, as in many European languages: “I can sing”, “je peux chanter”, just add a nice neat ending to the verb and you’re done.

“Ganbatte kudasai” – what a great expression! Directly translated into English as “please try hard” or “please do your best” it’s more like “good luck” or “break a leg” – an expression of encouragement and sometimes sympathy over a hard task.

Sometimes those who know no foreign language will try to argue that the presence or absence of a word reflects the society. Ronald Reagan famously argued that the Russians had no word for “freedom” and therefore did not understand the concept (“svoboda” is the word in Russian). Unlike the Japanese, we have no word for “suicide of a parent with their child” but sadly that does not mean that English-speaking countries are immune to those tragedies.

Experiments with tribes who have only a small number of words for colour showed that this did not affect their ability to identify as many shades of colour as people from countries that had many more words.

Learn a foreign language and you’ll be amazed at the funny things you pick up – and you’ll find that it teaches you about your own language, too.

At la Academia we believe strongly in the importance of accurate, reliable translation. So we are saddened to see that the excellent Translation Studies Unit (TSU) at Imperial College is under threat of closure or transfer to another institution. The TSU specialises in training scientific, medical and technical translators. As stated many times in these pages, translation is a very specialised field and good translators usually have a core set of subjects in which they are particularly knowledgeable. Translators with specialist knowledge of these sectors are in great demand, and we see no sense in cutting back on developing linguists who can provide good scientific translation. We wish our colleagues at the Translation Unit success in their campaign. If you would like to show your support the petition is here: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/petition-against-the-transferral-or-closure-of-the-translation-studies-unit

The census data released this week shows some interesting statistics on language – for example, nearly 3m households in England and Wales have no adults who speak English as their native language. This presents challenges to the education, legal, health and community sectors who need to ensure that important information is translated or interpreted accurately to their audiences. Many service users will bring a relative to meetings to act as an interpreter, but this can cause embarrassment or miscommunication and a professional interpreter should be engaged as soon as possible. Urdu and Bengali translators and interpreters are more widely available now than in the past, but with the Polish and Nigerian populations increasing rapidly service providers in Manchester, Liverpool and other population centres are short of qualified and experienced interpreters. La Academia has many years experience of providing interpreters for court hearings, to interpret for the police, health services and local councils. We are happy to help you find an interpreter whether it be in Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Urdu or Polish!
