Why bother to learn Spanish when you can visit Spain with no need to speak Spanish? In fact, you could visit parts of Spain and speak nothing but English. But how much are you missing? When you can speak Spanish, in places where this is the mother tongue, you will be able to get along with people so much more easily and engage fully in the local culture – and maybe get away from some of your more irritating fellow tourists.
It’s not only Spain where Spanish is spoken. There are 21 Spanish-speaking countries in the world. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world, and the most spoken language in the Americas. At the end of the 19th century, there were 60 million people who spoke Spanish. Today there are nearly 500 million Spanish speakers. Learn Spanish and you can speak to all of them!
Happily, Spanish is one of the easiest languages for a native English speaker to learn. The grammar and pronunciation is different from English, but simpler and more consistent. Because English takes almost 30% of its vocabulary from Latin, you will immediately recognise and understand many Spanish words that share the same roots. So you will be able communicate well even before you’ve reached a high level of Spanish speaking. The motivation you will feel from speaking and being understood will keep you wanting more.
If you’re one of the 21% of adults in the UK who planned to learn a language in 2018, according to a poll commissioned by the British Council then there’s still time. We regularly offer a number of group and individual courses in various languages and for many different levels. The courses are available throughout the day from early morning to evening and on Saturdays. The next Adult Beginners courses start on Wednesday 31st October 7 till 9pm. Booking is essential as we have very limited places on offer. No previous knowledge of Spanish is necessary.
