Learning Spanish never takes a popularity dip, because it’s relevant in so many more places and situations than visiting Spain, re-locating to Spain or working in Spain. The Spanish language is directly applicable to 24 other countries and regions, too.
Hispanic culture is felt globally. It’s an enormous factor that contributes to why learning Spanish remains on the agendas of many people in many countries.
As Hispanic Heritage Month, from 15th September-15th October annually, draws to a close, it’s well worth thinking about the benefits learning Spanish entails.
According to Days of the Year, Hispanic culture is too sweeping to be confined to a single day of celebration –
“…it dates back to 1968 when a Hispanic Heritage Week was created under President Lyndon Johnson. It was then expanded to encompass a whole month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan.”
The sheer breadth of countries where Spanish is the official language – or spoken by a notable % of the population – reflects why learning Spanish never loses its allure.
In addition to Spain itself, the list includes –
- Andorra
- Mexico
- United States – Wikipedia notes that, “The U.S. is a predominantly English-speaking country. As is true of many immigrant families, the immigrants often speak Spanish and some English, while their children are fluent English speakers because they were born and educated in the U.S. The recent influx of large numbers of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries into the U.S. has meant that the number of Spanish-speaking U.S. residents has increased…”
- Belize
- Costa Rica
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
- Honduras
- Nicaragua
- Panama
- Argentina
- Bolivia
- Chile
- Columbia
- Ecuador
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Uruguay
- Venezuela
- Cuba
- Dominican Republic
- Puerto Rico
- Equatorial Guinea
- Easter Island
