There was an understandable presumption that learning Spanish might lose its allure in post-Brexit Britain. But the severing of ties and cooling of relations with one of our nearest neighbours hasn’t had the feared impact.

Surprisingly, learning Spanish is still on the rise and rise. In fact, it’s traversing generation gaps, with more teenagers than ever learning Spanish at A-level since 2019, making A-level Spanish even more popular than A-level French.

What’s more, the British Council’s Language Trends Report 2022 revealed that the appetite for learning Spanish is deepening from an even younger age. “Spanish will also overtake French as the most popular language at GCSE by 2026 if current trends continue”, it surmised.

So, why is Spanish such a sought-after language amongst learners of all ages? Here are just a few reasons why it’s continuing to buck any post-EU sentiments:

Tourism

You could say that sun, sea, sand, siestas and Sangria are all factors as to why learning Spanish is doing better than holding its own.  Despite horizons have broadening, Spain remains the Number 1 holiday destination for UK holidaymakers.

Widely Used Global Language

Spanish is the official language in 21+ countries, mainly in Central and South America. English isn’t a major language in many of them. So Spanish is a must if you want to get along competently without looking like bungling Brit abroad.

Easier to Learn for Native English and Other European Language Speakers

Spanish is acknowledged as one of the least arduous and complex languages for native English speakers to learn. Plus, it’s also easier for native French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian speakers. This is because Spanish is one of five of what are known as Romance languages. These are a language family derived from Latin. As a result, there’s a mixing and matching of grammar, syntax and vocabulary. So, once you’ve mastered one, it’s easier to tackle others.

Conducting Business Abroad

Learning Spanish is obviously beneficial if you trade with Spain. In addition, it’s also an asset if you want to get in to some of the key underdeveloped but emerging economies, such as Mexico, Argentina, Columbia and Chile.
