Wondering why learning Portuguese is so fundamental in the 2020s? How about millions of reasons? And World Portuguese Language Day, celebrated every 5th May, is just one of them, providing a lively reminder of how powerful, beautiful, and frankly, cool Portuguese is:
- It’s the official language of Brazil and Portugal – In fact, São Paulo has the most Portuguese speakers on the planet!
- It unites people across continents, from Angola to East Timor.
- It’s one of the most widely spoken languages in the southern hemisphere and still growing globally.
(Also, José Mourinho. Need we say more?)
Let’s take a closer look at the reasons for learning Portuguese – and the day inspiring you to make the move.
Learning Portuguese is a Global Party – and You’re Invited
World Portuguese Language Day marks the historic 2005 meeting when Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) ministers first came together to celebrate their shared culture and linguistic bond. Now, it’s a global festival where music, literature, food, and connection take centre stage.
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations summarised to UNESCO: “Languages of global communication, such as the Portuguese language, play a crucial role in promoting understanding, affection, mutual respect and coexistence among peoples and citizens of the most distinct geographical origins.”
Well said, Sir! But there’s a far wider reach at play too.
Big Conversations, Even Bigger Opportunities
As the University of Birmingham puts it in their Why learn Portuguese? article: “Portuguese is the fourth most spoken language in the world and can potentially connect you with over 260 million people worldwide, opening up exciting opportunities for cultural exchanges, tourism, business, and engagement with global issues like climate change.”
Not too shabby, is it?
So, why wait or hesitate? Now’s the perfect time to start, whether you dream of samba-ing through Rio, doing business in Lisbon, or reading Fernando Pessoa in his original words.
